Poetry Friday: “Flashlight Night” winner – and another amazing review!

Before I get to today’s post, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read my blog.

Whether or not you subscribe, I realize there’s a lot going on in your day – heck, my days are insanely crazy, with 2 kids at home here during the summer and me trying to write in-between household chores and random errands – so the fact that you are willing to spend a few minutes of your life reading what I have posted really, truly means a lot.

Thank you.

I also want to thank everyone who participated in last week’s contest! In celebration of the upcoming release of Flashlight Night (Boyds Mills Press, Sept. 2017), I said I would give away a signed copy to one person out of all the folks who left a comment on last Friday’s post, “liked” the post, or shared it via Twitter and/or Facebook. And that person is…

Linda Baie!!

Congratulations, Linda! Just send me an email or Facebook message with your mailing address and I’ll get this in the mail to you asap. And thank you for entering the contest and sharing the news about Flashlight Night!

Now, I still have ANOTHER copy to give away…I’d love to announce my 500th follower (my little ol’ blog is up to 490 followers on the eve of its 5th year!), so if you are not officially ‘following’ this blog, I hope you’ll consider doing so. My 500th follower will also win a signed copy!

Flashlight Night (Boyds Mills Press) hits bookshelves Sept. 19, 2017, and pre-orders are available now through Barnes & Noble and Amazon. If you prefer, you can always wait til Sept. 19 and purchase it at your favorite local independent bookstore.

Oh, and speaking of Flashlight, I am simultaneously thrilled and humbled by its latest review…this time, from Publisher’s Weekly! To quote them, both the text and illustrations together “don’t just lobby for children to read—they show how readers play.” About a month ago, I was fortunate to receive a starred review from Kirkus…so imagine my amazement yesterday, when I learned how much the folks at PW enjoyed it.

I was also fortunate to see Flashlight included in a list of notable picture books on Mrs. Knott’s Book Nook and Alyson Beecher’s Kid Lit Frenzy blog. The word “grateful” doesn’t begin to express my feelings; I hope the book-buying public likes it as much as all these reviewers!

  2. How wonderful to receive positive comments from Publisher’s Weekly! So happy for you. I hear you on writing in the summer time. I get up early and mean to spend just a few minutes on social media and then I wake up again! Argh. Congrats again, on Flashlight! I hope you are deep into your next to-be-published project.

  4. SO much great, good news about FLASHLIGHT!! “. . . show how readers play.” What’s better. And all the amazing mentions and lists are well deserved. And Linda Baie — such a sweet person! So glad she won this copy. Matt, I remember those days well. A challenge to write with children underfoot. But I’d take those days back in a heartbeat. I’m rooting for continued success for Flashlight Night!!

    1. Thank you for your kind words and all your support, Rebecca. It doesn’t look like I’ll be going to your ‘Highlights’ workshop after all, as we just learned we need to replace our oil tank (at about $3000)…but hopefully one of these days we’ll meet in person. Hope you have a nice weekend!

I have my copy pre-ordered and SO happy about all of your terrific success. Having watched your career(s) develop in a small way ie dad, voiceover guy and poet/blogger, it has been a pleasure to see it all flourish. So happy for such a terrific guy. Sorry you won’t make the Highlights workshop…was it Rebecca Kai’s? I am going. Hoping I will be able to spend more time seriously writing now. Life has been hard but isn’t that the way for everyone…no excuses, just anticipation and happiness to be surrounded by such a wonderful bunch in the kidlitosphere and poetry Friday group! So happy the lovey Linda Baie won your book. I already subscribe so some other very lucky person will get a book that is going to be smashing, I just can tell.

    1. Thank you so, so much, Janet – I really appreciate everything you said. Yes, that workshop was Rebecca’s…and I’m so disappointed. I hadn’t applied yet because I was waiting to find out how much the tank installation was going to cost, and when I found out In nearly fell over. But I hope you enjoy your time in Honesdale, and please tell everyone i said hi!

  8. Congratulations again, Matt–so exciting to have your first book in hand AND to receive terrific reviews. You are inspiring me to take another look at a similarly-themed poem that I wrote several years ago and tried to develop as a picture book, but wasn’t sure it worked.
AND, I don’t think I subscribe to your blog, so I’ll do that now and help you get to 500!
