Poetry Friday: The Summer Shindig is Here!

.
Just look at those blue skies…a perfect day for a cookout, wouldn’t you say?

Well, that’s just what we’re doing here at the ol’ Triple-R!

A number of years ago, David L. Harrison began hosting a little summertime get-together at his blog, and Joy “The Poetry Princess” Acey and I had so much fun we offered to move it to one of our blogs this year, so David could just sit back and enjoy his burger and an ice-cold adult beverage without the worry of cooking or cleaning up.

By the way, David’s a busy fellow – in addition to his newest poetry collection, Crawly School for Bugs (Wordsong, 2018), he also has a chapter in a new book co-published by the ILA, the cover of which you can see to your right. (Congratulations, David!) If you’d like to lern more about the book, you can visit this blog post.

I also have some good publishing news, too, which I shared a couple weeks ago here. Another picture book contract! I’ll be sure to keep you posted as we move forward.

So please grab a bench or lawn chair and relax! We don’t have a pool, but you’re welcome to take a dip in the stream in back, or in the pond across the street – or we can just spray each other with the hose.

Can I get you some deviled eggs or some ribs? Perhaps some barbecued eggplant or blueberry-corn salad for the vegans And don’t worry, there’s plenty of Moxie! (I always keep a supply)

Since poetry is all about observation, I thought the above photo – taken here in town the other day – was a perfect opportunity for us to observe. My 4-year-old daughter and I spent a good 15 minutes trying to see what we could find in the clouds; I was quite impressed that she was able to pick out a dog, an alligator, and a velociraptor, among other things. In this photo, I spy a mirror-image Italy, a profile of a person with a large nose, and a cat chasing a mouse, while my wife spotted a dove in flight – not as part of the clouds, but in the blue sky. What do YOU see?

Oh, and let’s not forget a little poetry…

Speaking of clouds, I thought I’d re-share this poem I wrote almost exactly 2 years ago. I took the photo while walking home from our town library and knew I had to come up with some words to go with it!

I hope you’ll join in and leave a line or two about your favorite part of summer, or share a favorite summer poem or song! And for today’s complete Poetry Friday roundup, be sure to head over to Karen Edmisten’s little home on the web!

  1. Oh, my goodness! My first BBQ of the summer….and a surprise one. THANK YOU! I believe I’ll take a helping of that delicious sounding blueberry and corn salad. yum. Many congratulations on your next picture book. I really look forward to hearing more. My favorite part of summer has to be the sky as you describe it in your poem…all the bright possibilities. Happy Poetry Friday to you.

Good morning, Matt, and thanks for hosting the party. I love that pond across the way. I can imagine the fun you have with your little one watching the creatures that live in and around it. And finding faces and figures in clouds is a wonderful way to while away summer hours. It’s a little early for me to eat much but I’ll be back later and enjoy the food then. If you don’t mind, I’m going to stroll over to the pond and just take in this beautiful scene. I’ll take a cup of coffee with me.

    1. Welcome, David. You have Goose Lake – we have Goose Pond! There have been two families this year, each with their own set of 4 or 5 goslings who have been steadily growing up over the past 2 months. I keep trying to get photos, but the geese always end up in the reeds and weeds before I have a chance. If you enlarge the photo and look closely, though, you’ll notice a little black dot about 1/3 of the way down from the top and just right of center, below the clump of trees…that’s one of the many red-winged blackbirds that call this little pond home, along with swallows, finches, painted turtles, snappers, and about a zillion frogs!

Hey Veda! Are you still here or have you already headed off to sailing? Thanks for the watermelon. It’s my first taste this year and your thumper instinct was right on! Sail pretty!

Good Friday morning, Matt and David! Wonderful to have a party this Friday, and I love the summer poem “crystal cirrus flickers” though our wildfires happening right now are not good in the forests. I’d rather keep them in the clouds! I believe I see a pig-like creature far to the left, Matt. I have cinnamon rolls for all, and a favorite summer quote from a favorite book, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury: “Hold summer in your hand, pour summer in a glass, a tiny glass of course, the smallest tingling sip for children; change the season in your veins by raising glass to lip and tilting summer in” Thanks for a grand invitation!

Hey Matt! Thank you for hosting this kivekt party! I can’t wait to try some of the goodies…. the perfectly ripe watermelon, a taste of cinnamon roll, the corn and blueberry salad. Good thing I came hungry. Oh, and I brought you a rhubarb cake with whipped cream to squirt on. My stand of rhubarb is huge this year, gotta use it up! Your pond sounds wonderful, and I intend to stroll over and look for all the creatures. This spring I was walking by the river with two grandkids and we saw a snake grab a fish and begin to eat it! Right there in front of us!!! Well… thanks again for inviting me to this lovely party. The corn and blueberry salad is delish, by the way. I’ll stroll about and say hello to David and Linda if I can find them. Thanks again.

  5. Hello Everyone!

Thanks for hosting the summer shindig, Matt! Loving all the cloud pics and your poem “Skyfire.” That stream looks idyllic — perfect for relaxing and daydreaming . . .

Appreciate all the vittles you’ve laid out (grilled eggplant is my favorite). I brought 38 pies (is that too many?) — sometimes I get carried away when it comes to blueberry, apple, cherry, blackberry, peach, lemon meringue, strawberry, and pumpkin.

Don’t have a summer poem or quote, but I did bring some friends with a song. Hope you have lots of ribs cause these guys are hungry. Their music has always been synonymous with summer for me.

So, Matt. Swell party you have going on today. Now that I’ve been up and around I’m having a hard time staying away from all the delightful food. Love anything barbecued. I brought the first homemade ice cream of the year. It’s ready to serve so if you can keep it covered it should stay fairly solid for quite a while. Do you have any syrup? I had mine out to bring and left it on my kitchen counter.

    1. Homemade ice cream sounds like a perfect dish to go along with Jama’s pies & Karen’s rhubarb cake! I have some chocolate syrup, if you’d like some, along with some extra-dark NH maple syrup and freshly-made raspberry-rhubarb preserves…help yourself!

Cherry pie, rhubarb cake—what enticing treats! Thanks for hosting this gathering, Matt. I started my morning with “Relax” by Ellen Bass (thanks to Jama) and so I had no choice but to buy two boxes of tiny plump strawberries from our local organic farm today. They are so ripe that we need to eat them THIS VERY MINUTE!! (and keep them out of the mouths of the tigers)

Hey everyone. It’s a swell party and I hate to leave it but Sandy and I have plans tonight and I have to get ready. I’ll be back later if I can, Matt. You’re a great host. Thanks again for everything.

Thanks for hosting the party! My favorite part of summer hasn’t quite arrived (thanks to a cold, wet spring that got the garden off to a late start) but I am looking forward to an abundance of fresh veggies and fruit–corn on the cob, zucchini and yellow squash, red ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, and juicy melons of all kinds!

  11. Thanks for this wonderful summer shindig Matt–hope it’s still going on.

Congrats on the new book!!! Love the images here and your moving poem.

I was going to bring a rhubarb crisp cause I’ve got a bumper crop growing this year too. Instead I’ll offer a little ditty on a critter that’s been growing in my backyard,
    CHANGE

I started as a tiny white dot

    Mom waved her wings
    and flew away–

    Everyday I’ve grown bigger,
    I’ve found my perfect spot–
Here goes my metamorphosis, in one sure shot!

  12. I’m a bit late. The food, I’m sure, is gone, but the words remain. To add to the gabfest, here are two lines from Bruce. (Springsteen, of course, is there any other Bruce?)

    Love’s a fool’s dance
I ain’t got much sense but I still got my feet

It’s from “Girls in Their Summer Clothes.” It’s never too late to dance. Have a great summer.
