Poetry Friday: Spine poetry and the sounds of the night

I hadn’t really planned on sharing anything like this, but when you get an idea, you have to either seize upon it or write it down somewhere so you can seize upon it another day.

I chose the former.

I was simply sitting at my desk, looking at some of the many books I have in front of me, and a couple of book titles caught my eye. I immediately began scouring for any other titles I might be able to combine – and voila!

When thunder comes
before morning
in the middle of the night
voices
the gods, themselves,
in the woods

The Post of Christmas Past…

I had been wondering what to share today and was leisurely scrolling through some of my past Christmas posts when I came upon a poem I’d written 6 years ago for Tabatha Yeatts‘ annual Winter Poetry Swap. This is a fun event she hosts every year and something in which I’ve unfortunately not been able to participate lately due to how busy I’ve become.

The premise is simple: everyone who signs up is randomly given someone else’s name, and you write a poem for that person and send them a small gift. I decided to combine these and used my poem AS the gift! The name I had been given was the wonderful Margaret Simon, poet, blogger, and educator extraordinaire, and decided to utilize her years of blogging as my inspiration.

I thought it might be interesting to read through her years of past Christmas blog posts and create a found poem from some of the words and phrases she had previously written:

“EVERYBODY COUNTS!”

My newest picture book, Everybody Counts! (The Little Fig, 1/2023), continues to pop up at bookstores across the country! It was scheduled for a Jan. 1 publishing date, but since it’s ahead of schedule, the publisher is encouraging sales already.

Everybody Counts! features 12 animals of varying ethnicities teaching the reader how to count to ten in each of their languages, along with an ethnic name and food item. Languages included in the book:

Now, then – today’s poem might be considered by some to be…hmm, how do I say this…”underwhelming?” Not that I’m not proud of it, it’s just a little bit shorter than I’d anticipated – and folks who don’t understand found poetry might simply dismiss it as simple or easy (neither of which accurately describes the poem!).

You see, found poetry, as I’ve explained in previous posts like this one from February, is poetry that one “finds” in other writing – whether it’s another poem, a book, magazine, or wherever words may habitate. You sort through all the words and phrases to find the ones that speak to you, and you create a new poem from them.

Always up for a challenge, I thought I’d ask my kids to help me out.

“Pick out any book,” I told my 7-year-old daughter.

“This one!” she said, handing me a signed copy of Sara Levine’s Fossil by Fossil (Millbrook Press, 2018). Sara’s book had come out just a couple of months before my Don’t Ask a Dinosaur (POW! Kids Books), and at one point that spring we found ourselves hosting a dual book signing, so we signed each others’ books…and my 11-year-old son, a dino fanatic, loved it.

However, as wonderful a book as it is, it’s a picture book – which means it’s not very word-heavy. I was worried about finding enough words on any particular spread to be able to come up with a decent poem.

Turning to my 11-year-old son, I said cautiously, “pick whichever spread you want.”

“Hopefully one with a lot of words,” I added.

So he found the spread featuring one of his favorite dinosaurs – Tyrannosaurus Rex. I looked it over and, taking a deep breath, dove into my search for a found poem. It was a search that lasted far longer than I thought it would.

You see, some folks might think that with fewer words, it’s easier to come up with a poem. That could not be farther from the truth, my friends. With lots of words, one has lots of options; with few words, the options become severly limited, especially if one is going to write a poem that doesn’t ‘sound’ like a found poem.

Finding a poem here was like finding a fossil: I was going to need to dig and dig! Here’s the spread he gave me:

Like I said, it’s a fantastic book, but creating a poem from these few words was a challenge. But a challenge is what I asked for, and a challenge was what I was given. I responded thusly:

Reptiles

In the oceans,

………..in the sky,

on land,

………..imagine…

…………………..…teeth!

Not the most ground-breaking poem to ever appear on a blog, but a far better poem than I initially thought I’d be able to pull off. And really, found poetry is all about stretching the mind and playing with words…very rarely does found poetry get published (although it certainly can), but its visual and tactile nature of creation makes it absolutely integral when teaching poetry and comprehension.

Poetry Friday: New “Wit & Wordplay” videos on the way!

Well, it’s been a long time coming, but I just produced another “Wit & Wordplay” video, part of a continuing series of poetry videos I began last spring, shortly after Covid-19 hit the country and shut down the schools, the economy, and pretty much everything we were used to.

It’s been a busy year for me, too – I’ve sold three manuscripts, I have two new ones out to start off the new year, I’ve been invited to present at a big literary festival in the fall (more on that coming soon), I’m once again judging our state Poetry Out Loud competion this month, PLUS we’re homeschooling 2 young kids….yikes! I feel bad that I’ve not been able to read or comment on many of my fellow bloggers’ posts, but time is at a premium for me and I rarely have any that’s free.

In fact, as soon as I’m done writing this I need to go grade school papers. >sigh…<

But last week I shared some “nestlings” – aka, found poems inside a larger poem, courtesy of author/poet Irene Latham – and since I’d been wanting to do a video on found poetry anyway, I figured now was as good a time as any!

Poetry Friday: Finding a nestling inside my favorite poem

It probably shouldn’t be any surprise to you that I enjoy reading and writing poetry. So I’ve been intrigued with my friend Irene Latham’s latest poetry collection, This Poem is a Nest (Wordsong/Boyds Mills & Kane, 2020), in which she takes the concept of found poetry in an intriguing new direction.

Starting with a primary “Nest” poem, as she calls it, Irene then constructs an entire book full of poems using words she pulls from that original poem. Now, found poetry isn’t necessarily anything new, but creating a book entirely out of found poetry – from one single source poem – is quite unusual, and Irene does it beautifully and creatively.

So the more I’ve thought about it, the more I wanted to have some fun seeing what I could do with a source poem. And my favorite poem of all time was just the ticket!

Starting with Percy Bysshe Shelley’s classic “Ozymandias,” I decided to see if I could create at least 3 short poems that somehow related to the original, following Irene’s rules of using the words in order of their appearance in the “Nest” poem.

And I managed to do it! Here’s the original, with words highlighted according to which poem they appear in:

Antique legs, a shattered sneer

Decay

In the desert,
the sculptor’s lifeless hand

You’ll notice I also took the titles from the Nest poem, as well, trying to tie them to the subject. As a fun, brain-stretching exercise, I have to say it was a lot of fun! Activities like this really get you thinking in extraordinary ways, helping you to see words and imagery differently and forcing you to consider the nuanced meaning of every word.

Poetry Friday: Spine poetry as a fun activity kids won’t realize is educational!

As I mentioned in this past Tuesday’s post, several children’s authors and illustrators are offering readalouds, drawing lessons, activity sheets, and other educational resources for kids, parents, and teachers who now find themselves “remote learning.”

For my part, I’m producing a series of short videos on poetry: how to write it, how to appreciate it while reading, and some tips on poetry-related activities. Since so many of my peers are doing video chats with students, I thought I would focus my “Wit & Wordplay” videos, as I call them, on parents and educators.

For some time now I’ve been wanting to help my educator and parent friends with some educational videos…but I’ll admit these have been hastily put together, as I am trying to assist my kids with this “new normal” of home-schooling while attempting to write and do my voiceover work. Moreover, I’m working with a video editing program I’ve never used before, as I had to reinstall Windows about a month ago and lost the program I had been using (MS Movie Maker), which is apparently no longer available!

Oh, and did I mention we have a 10-week-old Great Dane puppy?

So, yeah…I’ve been a bit busy.

The fact I was able to create six videos in two days is still surprising to me, but I have plenty more I plan on producing over the weekend. For today, I wanted to share a couple of simple spine poetry examples I use in my most recent video. Spine poetry is a form of “found poetry,” whereby you search through books’ spines to find titles you think might go together to create a phrase, scene or thought:

There’s a cow in the road!
Deadly animals
wild in the streets…
choose your path.

Again, it doesn’t need to be long – a few titles are all you need! Even two books would suffice:

You get the idea! Silly, thoughtful, scary…doesn’t matter! The important thing is that kids are learning how to put disparate thoughts together (a book about deadly animals together with Star Wars®? Whoulda thunk??)

Two weeks ago, I spotlighted Michelle Schaub and her brand-new poetry collection, Finding Treasure: A Collection of Collections (Charlesbridge, 2019) – and offered a PERSONALLY-SIGNED COPY to one lucky winner.

A “found poem” is simply a poem that uses the words from one source – like a magazine, newspaper, book, etc. –  to create a poem. So in this case, readers took the words from Michelle’s poem and re-created them into new poems of their own. I shared several of the poems last Friday, so here are the newest ones:

Poetry Friday: Found Haiku

I’ve written found poetry.

I’ve written haiku.

Somehow, I’ve never written “found haiku,” though, until my blogging poet friend Michelle H. Barnes encouraged her readers to do just that, on her blog Today’s Little Ditty!

Found poetry is created when one takes lines and words from one source – a newspaper, book, even another poem – and crafts a new poem. In the case of found haiku, Michelle’s guest this month, Linda Mitchell, challenged readers to write found poems in the form of haiku (technically, haiku is about nature, but we’re not splitting hairs).

It just so happened that the day I was planning to get started was the exact day I stumbled upon an article from NH Business Review about the resurgence (and surprising good health) of indie bookstores in our state. I ended up writing two poems – one less obviously about books than the other:
.

creative, nimble
little steps and sound footing
overwhelm death’s knell

resilience, savvy –
the book, unchanged like the shark,
continues to thrive
.

Poetry Friday: The 2019 Progressive Poem wraps up!

First: the (partially) sad news. The company that published Flashlight Night is being sold to another company. The Highlights/Boyds Mills Press family is splitting up, and although it’s disappointing – for the folks who work there as well as for all my friends and fellow writers who have books with them – I’m trying to maintain a positive attitude. This is business, after all, and if this change allows BMP and its imprints to carry on and flourish, then it will have been worth it.

In other, more happy news…

The 2019 Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem is finally complete! This is an annual event for National Poetry Month that was created by author and poet Irene Latham. Each day throughout April, a different children’s writer/blogger would add a new line until the poem concluded April 30 with Donna at Mainely Write. Donna even put it to music and recorded herself singing it – which is a first!

I started the poem off with a couple of found lines from songs, and everyone taking part maintained that premise…using pieces of song lyrics to construct our poem. However, it occurred to me that something was missing:  a title! Usually, someone somewhere along the line creates a title, but that didn’t happen this year. So it’s my sincere hope the Progressive Poem crew doesn’t mind me capping off the poem:

Finding Summer
(The 2019 Progressive Poem)

Endless summer; I can see for miles…
Fun, fun, fun – and the whole world smiles.
No time for school- just time to play,
we swim the laughin’ sea each and every day.

You had only to rise, lean from your window,
the curtain opens on a portrait of today.
Kodachrome greens, dazzling blue,
it’s the chance of a lifetime,

make it last forever–ready? Set? Let’s Go!
Come, we’ll take a walk, the sun is shining down
Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes
Tomorrow’s here. It’s called today.

Gonna get me a piece o’ the sky.
I wanna fly like an eagle, to the sea
and there’s a tiger in my veins.
Oh won’t you come with me waltzing the waves,
………………………………diving the deep?

It’s not easy to know
less than one minute old
we’re closer now than light years to go
To the land where the honey runs

…we can be anyone we want to be…
There’s no stopping curiosity.
What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing

The 2019 Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem begins!

National Poetry Month has officially arrived – and with it, Irene Latham‘s annual Progressive Poem, an opportunity for 30 bloggers and children’s writers to come together and create a poem over the course of the month. With so many people taking part, it’s always interesting to see how the poem grows and develops – and of course, ends!

This year, I’m excited to once again be a part of it…and honored to have the opportunity to begin the poem! Traditionally, we find the poem tends to lead a main character off on an adventure or spend time pondering life’s little joys and mysteries – so I wanted to do something different. (If there’s one thing you know about me, it’s that I always try to take the literary road not taken!)

After much thought and consideration, and days of deliberation, I’ve come up with something I hope is worthy of our poem:

Ready? Here goes…
.

Endless summer; I can see for miles
.

Now, a little backstory as to how this came to be: I wanted to set our character (or subject) up in a position where the reader is immediately wondering about the character’s location, situation, or surroundings. So I tossed ideas around and “I can see for miles” popped into my head, for no apparent reason. But I couldn’t use that – it’s the title of a song by The Who! That wouldn’t work!

Or would it?

So I thought some more and wondered if I could add to it. Perhaps something to ground the reader just a bit in understanding the setting…and suddenly the song “Private Universe” by Crowded House popped into my head, also for no apparent reason. (You’re getting an idea as to how weird the writing life is) Anyway, I thought about it and scanned the lyrics to see if there was something I could glean…and what do you know. The phrase “endless summer” – which is also, of course, a classic Beach Boys album!

I knew what I had to do.

I combined the two “found” lines into one line – which I think offers just enough exposition to get our poem/story rolling. I therefore challenge my fellow writers to do the same:  continue this method and use only FOUND lines! They don’t have to be strictly song titles or lyrics like my line…but I think this will be a fun challenge to add to the development of our poem. I hope you agree! But of course, your line is YOUR line – so if you feel a bit intimidated by the prospect, feel free to do your own thing and add whatever you’d like. (This is supposed to fun, after all!)
