Poetry Friday: Gearing up for #PoetryOutLoud with Gwendolyn Brooks – and “I Am Today” in Korean?!?

Tonight’s the night!

I will once again be a performance judge for the Poetry Out Loud New Hampshire State Finals at the NH Statehouse in Concord. Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation competition among high school students, and the winners of the state regional finals are meeting this evening to find out who is the best in the state!

So today I wanted to share another poem from the Poetry Out Loud catalog, this time by the incredibly gifted poet Gwendolyn Brooks who, at 33 yars of age, became the first black writer to receive the Pulitzer Prize in 1950.

In addition to her poetry for adults, she also published a collection of poems about (and for) children in 1956, titled Bronzeville Boys and Girls. It was titled as such because it was more or less a follow-up companion book (well, sort of) to her highly-acclaimed A Street in Bronzeville, which had been published in 1945.

Think about that for just a minute. A woman. Who was black. Writing for children. Being published in the ’50’s. When you consider how rare it was in that culture for someone like Brooks, with so much against her, to be published and receive that amount of recognition – well, it was something pretty special.

Fortunately, Poetry Out Loud offers several of Brooks’ poems for students to choose, including this gem:

.

a song in the front yard

I’ve stayed in the front yard all my life.
I want a peek at the back
Where it’s rough and untended and hungry weed grows.
A girl gets sick of a rose.

I want to go in the back yard now
And maybe down the alley,
To where the charity children play… (continue reading HERE)

In other news…I have a Korean translation of one of my books!

How cool is this?? Last year, the publisher of I Am Today, POW! Kids Books, hired a Korean company to pick some of their books to translate and market overseas, and mine was selected as one they felt would be successful. I have no idea how the rhymes would translate to another language, but I’m dying to track down a copy and find out!

For today’s Poetry Friday roundup head on over to my friend Laura Purie Salas’ little home on the web, Small Reads for Brighter Days, where she is celebrating her multiple pring book releases and gearing up for National Poetry Month by “digging” for poems!

.

I’m booking author visits for the 2023 winter/spring semester!

I love chatting with elementary and middle school classes about writing: why poetry is fun to read and write, the importance of revision, and how one’s imagination and creativity can lead to a fantastic career! My presentations are tailored to fit the needs of the classes and students’ ages. One day I might be sharing details of how a picture book like Flashlight Night (Astra Young Readers, 2017) was created; the next, I’ll be discussing dinosaur breath or origami sea turtles!

Student presentations include:

  • The Making of a Picture Book
  • How a Child Saved a Book
  • “Once Upon Another Time”
  • The Most Imporant Thing about Writing Poetry
  • “I Am Today”
  • “A Beginner’s Guide to Being Human”

Adult presentations include:

  • The Making of a Picture Book
  • The Most Important Thing about Writing Poetry
  • Free Yourself with Free Verse
  • Tight Language, Loose Narratives: Crafting a Non-Traditional Picture Book

Poetry Friday: 2022 Summer reading lists and “Night Wishes”!

Well, it’s that time of year again – the kids are getting out of school for the summer and parents are wondering how to keep them busy!

Many schools and libraries share lists of suggested summer reading for parents, of course, and I’m very proud to see several of my own books showing up on these reading lists and blogs.

.

A few of the folks I’d like to thank:

Hello, Wild Things “Flashlight Book Basket” (Flashlight Night) (This was posted in 2020, but I just love the concept!)

Asa Books July Reading List (Flashlight Night) (This was also originally from 2020, but I just came across it yesterday and wanted to give them a shout-out. Thanks, folks!)

Last but not least, I want to thank Jena Benton for reviewing Once Upon Another Time on her blog this past April for National Poetry Month! I never realized it until this past week, so thank you so much, Jena!

Since it’s Poetry Friday, I thought I’d share two poems from Lee Bennett Hopkins’ anthology Night Wishes (Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, 2020), which has received so much love from librarians and children’s book lovers!

One of the poems is my contribution and the other was written by my friend Rebecca Kai Dotlich. I was surprised to see that we both used the term, “child” – which I think helps maintain the book’s continuity – even though neither of us saw the other’s poem until the book was published!

There’s a lot more poetry in store! Today’s complete Poetry Friday roundup is at MoreArt4All, Michelle Kogan’s little home on the web, so I hope you’ll stop by and check out all the links and fun!

By the way, if you’ve ever wondered how to get published without an agent, I hope you’ll join Natasha Yim, Ashok Banker, and Yours Truly for what I hope will be a fun, informative panel discussion with San Francisco Northeast Bay SCBWI hostess Gennie Bruce Gorback next Wed., June 22!

Registration closes TODAY, June 17 – so don’t delay!

Only $5 for SCBWI members, $10 for non-members – so no excuses! I’ll be watching for you. 😉

Poetry Friday: Celebrating May 13th with birthday poet Kathleen Jamie – and a “double” picture book winner!

Last month we celebrated National Poetry Month with a ton of original poems inspired by my writing prompt, #PoetryCUBED – concluding last week with my own poem, “Spring.”

So today, I thought I would celebrate the birthday of a famous Scottish poet few people in the U.S. seem to know: Kathleen Jamie.

Now, granted, my Scottish heritage does make me a bit biased when it comes to European poetry, but Kathleen really is an amazing wordsmith who combines the imagery of Sandburg with the allegorical style of Frost. If you’ve not heard of her, you should:

.

Before the Wind

If I’m to happen upon the hill
where cherries grow wild
it better be soon, or the yellow-
eyed birds will come squabbling

claiming the fruit for their own…
.

– Kathleen Jamie, 2004

(read the entire poem HERE)

Kathleen was born on this very day in 1962 and had her very first book of poetry published at the age of 20! So happy birthday, Kathleen, and here’s to many more.

In other news…

I’ve discovered that amber light bulbs make you look orange…but when author copies of your new picture book finally arrive, you take a picture, nonetheless!

ALSO: In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week last week, I offered to give away TWO copies of any of my books to ONE teacher: one for them, and one for their classroom! I picked their name at random, but realized yesterday that I had neglected to announce their name here – so let me make amends right now. Congratulations to…

JENNA JOHNSON!

Jenna chose to receive two copies of I Am Today, which I’ll be signing and getting in the mail to her soon. (Thanks again, Jenna!) In the meantime, please check out today’s Poetry Friday roundup at Imagine the Possibilities, where Rose shares an original poem inspired by the late Lee Bennett Hopkins anthology, Night Wishes (Eerdmans Books for Young Readers 2020). Not only is it a wonderful poem she’s written, but it was one of Lee’s last anthologies before he passed away and I was honored to have been invited to write a poem for it.

Poetry Friday: “I Am Today” is officially everywhere – and so are sea turtles!

Well, it finally happened.

I Am Today (POW! Kids Books) was officially published this past Tuesday!

Children are always being told they are the “Future”…but what if a child doesn’t want to wait, to make a difference? I Am Today is about a young girl who recognizes a need to take action, but also recognizes that she needn’t wait to take that action.

Many thanks to all the wonderful bloggers
who have shared their opinions about
I AM TODAY:
.

  • “An evocative story of a young girl standing up for what she believes in.”
    Roxanne Troup, GoodReads with Ronna
    .
  • “Flawless rhymes and stunning illustrations…A wonderful book that should be in every home, classroom and library!”
The Momma Spot / Future Bookworms
    .
  • “An inspirational and motivational story about a young girl who is acting TODAY rather than waiting for the future to make change”
    Little Book Locker
  • “This inspiring, heartfelt picture book literally gave me goosebumps with its hopeful message.”
Marianne Knowles, author and STEM Curriculum Coordinator at the Museum of Science, Boston
    .
  • “[The book] brings to mind that every child is unique and has a VOICE. Hopefully, it will find cozy corners in bedrooms and reading/writing stations in classrooms.”
Carol Varsalona, literacy advocate and Wonder Lead Ambassador for Wonderopolis
    .
  • “An absolute delight…Love, love, love it!”
Brian Gehrlein, author of THE BOOK OF RULES (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2022)

Sea turtles play a big role in the story. In fact, readers can even learn how to make their own origami sea turtles – just like the main character makes – using instructions included at the end of the book! So as I was preparing this week’s post, I thought about how I could incorporate sea turtles into a Poetry Friday post about my new book.

And then the poem just came to me…

.
sea turtle tanka

under sea salt moon
you pull yourself from fierce waves
with lumbering grace,
climb above the high tide line;
a family left in sand

© 2022 Matt F. Esenwine, all rights reserved

.

In case you do not know, this poem form is a tanka – a Japanese form similar to a haiku, although it actually predates haiku. The syllabic structure, in English-language terms, is 5-7-5-7-7, although one needn’t follow this religiously as our syllables are not exactly the same thing as Japanese syllables. But for simplicity’s sake, I stuck with the structure.

Hope you like it! And I hope you’ll check out I Am Today, as well! For all of today’s Poetry Friay links and fun, head over to Kat Apel’s blog Kat’s Whiskers, where she is celebrating the release of her newest verse novel, What Snail Knows (University of Queensland Press)!

A long-awaited #BookBirthday for I AM TODAY!

It was originally scheduled for publication way back on Oct. 5, 2021…and after six, count ’em, SIX delays, my newest picture book, I Am Today (POW! Kids Books), is officially here!

Children are always being told they are the “Future”…but what if a child doesn’t want to wait, to make a difference?

.

I AM TODAY is about a young girl who recognizes a need to take action. The story includes sea turtles, a factory, a town that rallies together, and even origami! But when you read the story, you’ll notice that NONE of that is in my text; no turtles, no pollution, no origami – not even a girl. I wrote the framework for a narrative, and illustrator Patricia Pessoa created and developed the entire plot!

(and at the end of the book, there are even directions on how to make your own origami turtle!)

It wasn’t an asteroid, but…

Last week, I told you that unless an asteroid was to hit, my next picture book, I Am Today (POW! Kids Books) would be officially published today.

Guess what.

It wasn’t exactly an asteroid, but I just learned from my editor that Simon & Schuster apparently needed more time to process the books that arrived at their warehouse a couple of weeks ago. So now it’s NEXT Tuesday, March 1 that we’ll be seeing the book arrive.

So now, after 7 different publication dates and six delays, I have my fingers, toes, and just about every other available body part crossed that it does, indeed, arrive! Folks who have already seen it have loved it, and I hope you will, too…

Poetry Friday: A 6th grader who doesn’t like poetry is back – with poetry he didn’t even need to write

A few weeks ago, I shared a poem my son had written for school – which was surprisingly good for someone who claims he doesn’t like poetry.

I didn’t realize at the time that he didn’t write the poem for school.

He wrote the poem just because.

He actually wrote four different poems, each about a subject that interests him, although none were required for school as I’d mistakenly thought. Nope, he tells me he wrote them simply because he felt like writing them. (And really, what better reason does one need?)

Now, before I share this second poem of his, I need to interject a little news about my upcoming picture book, I Am Today (POW! Kids Books), which is due out this Tuesday:

My next picture book is due out THIS TUESDAY!

After 6 different publication dates and FIVE delays, it finally arrives everywhere next week, Tue., Feb. 22 – and I really can’t wait for you to see it. (Come to think of it, I haven’t even received my own author copies yet, so I can’t wait to see it, either!)

Anyway, the reason I’m telling you this now is because my son’s poem actually feels inspired by my book’s plot – even though my son isn’t entirely sure it was. He’s very big on nature-based nonfiction and has a strong sense of right and wrong, so it’s possible his poem was all his own doing; however, I can’t help but feel he may have gleaned a bit of inspiration having seen the .pdf of I Am Today, with his imagery of the sea, its threatened life, the brave child, protesters, and a garbage cleanup.

Certainly sounds like I Am Today!

Regardless, I told him I was proud of his effort:

What a kid, eh? He just might end up being a poet yet.

Speaking of poets, my friend Laura Purdie Salas is gearing up for the publication of her own new picture book, We Belong (Carolrhoda, 2022), and she’s celebrating by hosting today’s Poetry Friday roundup at her blog, Small Reads for Brighter Days!

Poetry Friday: An antique Thackeray collection yields lost beauty

I’m praying no asteroids hit the earth.

If this seems a rather odd statement, then I encourage you to check out this past Tuesday’s post, where I explain why my next picture book, I Am Today (POW! Kids Books) has once again been delayed – for the last time!

Now then, as you may know, I’ve been in the process of moving my upstairs office/studio to a new space downstairs, and in doing so have been discovering all sorts of treasures I’d been holding onto for years:

I’ve found old CDs copied from cassette mixtapes I’d made while in college, stuffed animals like Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar, and even a Tim Finn promo album cover from when I was program director for my college radio station, WIUV, that I grabbed before I graduated. Thirty-seven years later, it finally has a frame – and a home on my office/studio wall!

I also found a commemorative baseball I’d received when I threw out the first pitch at a NH Fishercats baseball game way back when I was still working in radio.

Oh, and a giant door-sized poster of The Smiths!

And a college pennant!

And a — well, you get the picture. Lots of stuff to go through, and my wife is thrilled to know I’m not keeping it all.

But The Smiths poster is definitely staying.

Among the many books I re-discovered was a late-1800’s collection of works by 19th-century author William Makepiece Thackeray, most well-known for his novel, Vanity Fair. You might be familiar with another of his novels, The Luck of Barry Lyndon, which was turned into a movie by Stanley Kubrick in the ’70s.

Thackeray’s early life was equal parts tragedy and aimlessness. He went to school in Cambridge, England, but wasn’t a fan of academics; he studied law but didn’t stick with it; he inherited quite a sum of money upon his father’s death but sqaundered much of it gambling; he tried to start two newspapers and failed; and lost a great deal of money when two Indian banks failed (Thackeray was born in Calcutta, so had strong ties to India throughout his life).

And all of this happened before he even got married! Sadly, his wife began suffering post-partum depression following the birth of their third child, and because the medical community did not know how to diagnose or treat these issues, she fell further and further down the dark hole of mental incapacity until she was eventually confined to an asylum. (Interestingly, she outlived him by about 30 years)

The one thing he was good at was writing – and that’s what saved him.

So I thought I’d share this brief poem of his today. It’s neither one of his most well-known, nor one of his best, but I love the sentiment and cadence. Plus, with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I thought a little love poem like this would be perfect for Poetry Friday. (I also like the fact that it’s written from the POV of the flower):

Some may feel it’s overwrought or too sentimental, but I love its classic romantic, heart-tugging tone. For all of today’s poetry links and fun, head on over to Teacher Dance, where Linda is hosting the complete Poetry Friday roundup!

In other news…

“An evocative story of a young girl standing up for what she believes in.”

A #BookBirthday gets delayed…one final time!

Yes, it’s true. After five delays and six different publishing dates, my newest picture book, I Am Today (POW! Kids Books) is scheduled to be published Feb. 22, 2022 – for real!!

Due to this shipping/supply chain crisis we’re dealing with, the books have been sitting in port for MONTHS, waiting for a truck to haul them to the Simon & Schuster warehouse. Finally, they got picked up – YAY! – but then they remained stuck in a shipping container, and there was nothing my publisher could do about it.

Well, my editor has just told me that they are now offically at the warehouse – and unless an asteroid hits, the books will be for sale exactly two weeks from now on Feb. 22.

Let’s hope and pray the asteroid belt remains intact until then, shall we?
